What research says about game-based learning

Decades of studies suggest well-designed games improve engagement and transfer. The key word is designed.

September 21, 2026

Game-based learning has been studied for decades, and meta-analyses consistently find modest to meaningful gains in learning outcomes when games are designed around clear objectives rather than added as rewards. The largest effects tend to appear when games require students to make decisions, receive feedback and try again, which mirrors what learning scientists call deliberate practice.

The same research warns against chocolate-covered broccoli: games where the fun and the learning are disconnected. Points and badges alone rarely produce lasting understanding. What works is a core mechanic that is the concept itself, such as balancing a budget to survive a month, or adjusting prices to see demand respond.

RamQuest scenarios are built with that principle in mind. Each mechanic maps to a learning objective, and every decision produces evidence a teacher can review. Our goal is not to make school feel like a game, but to let students practice concepts in a space where mistakes are safe and informative.
